In a move that probably makes some church pews rattle, Destiny Adams, owner of Tumbleweed + Sage coffee shop in Wolfforth (a suburb of Lubbock), is handing out free emergency contraception kits — complete with Plan B, condoms, and pregnancy tests — to anyone who needs them, no questions asked. Think “latte and a life plan” with your order.
The kits (worth over $100, funded through Title X) are flying off the bathroom shelf faster than pumpkin spice in September. Naturally, local anti-abortion activists have staged protests, waved graphic signs, and even called the Wolfforth Police, who admitted Adams isn’t breaking the law but said the “legality” of free Plan B is complicated. (Spoiler: it’s not — you can buy it at CVS.)
This is all happening in the shadow of Lubbock’s 2021 vote to become a “sanctuary city for the unborn,” which effectively banned abortions inside city limits and made Lubbock the poster child for Texas’s anti-abortion movement. With Roe overturned and abortion outlawed statewide, the battleground has shifted to contraception — and Adams’ coffee shop has become ground zero.
So, while lawmakers and pastors cheer their abortion bans, a barista in Wolfforth is quietly making sure people can still control their futures — one cup of coffee and one emergency contraceptive kit at a time. If nothing else, West Texas now has the most ironic version of “grounds for choice.”
