In a move that surprised absolutely no one who has tracked the “Lubbock Curse” of entertainment venues, the Alamo Drafthouse has officially shuttered its doors. After a decade of serving up overpriced truffle fries and shushing anyone who dared to whisper, the theater decided that Saturday was its final curtain call. Now, instead of a curated cinematic experience, patrons are greeted by a paper flyer on the front door—the ultimate “it’s not me, it’s you” breakup note.
The closure comes courtesy of Triple Tap Ventures, the Houston-based franchise owner that apparently decided Lubbock, El Paso, and Houston just weren’t worth the effort anymore. While they couldn’t be bothered to provide a comment to local news, they did make sure to mention that you can get a refund for your future tickets. So, if you were planning on seeing a midnight screening of an indie horror flick next Tuesday, you can now use that money to buy several gallons of gas and drive around the Loop instead.
With the Alamo gone and Cinemark Movies 16 having kicked the bucket just last year, our “Hub City” movie options are dwindling faster than the local water supply. We’re now down to just two indoor theaters: Tinseltown and Premiere Cinemas. It’s a bold strategy for a city that claims to be a growing metroplex—eventually, the only thing left to do in Lubbock will be standing in a vacant parking lot and watching the wind blow a tumbleweed into a pothole.
It’s truly a poetic end for a place that prided itself on cinematic purity. After 10 years and 900 seats, the only thing being projected at the West Loop location now is the crushing realization that we can’t have nice things for more than a decade without them turning into a Spirit Halloween.
At least without the Alamo’s strict “no talking” policy, we can all finally discuss in a normal volume why every cool business in this town eventually decides that literally anywhere else is better than here.
