File this under “you had one job.” Micah Caleb Smyth, a 29-year-old officer with the Andrews Police Department, was arrested in Lubbock on charges of child abuse. Yep, the guy assigned to the school resource division — the one who’s supposed to keep kids safe — is now accused of hurting a child.

Authorities said the case doesn’t involve a student, but that doesn’t make it less gross. The Andrews County Sheriff’s Office got word of possible abuse back in August and handed the matter over to the Texas Rangers, who tracked Smyth down in Lubbock.

He’s now on administrative leave, which in cop-speak usually means “stay home, keep the benefits warm, and we’ll see how this plays out.”

When the officer stationed at schools gets arrested for child abuse, maybe it’s time to stop calling them “resource officers” and start calling them “liabilities in uniform.”
