Another Early Morning in Paradise: 46th Street’s 2:00 AM Wake-Up Call

Lubbock is really leaning into its “Hub City” nickname lately, specifically by acting as a high-traffic hub for the Major Crimes Unit. At the crisp, productive hour of 2:20 a.m. this Wednesday, dispatch received a call from the 2400 block of 46th Street. Apparently, someone decided that mid-week sleep was overrated and preferred to ring in the morning with some light gunfire.

The initial call was a bit of a “choose your own adventure” for emergency services. First, it was just a request for EMS. Then, as the call was being transferred—presumably while the operator was trying to wake up—it was revealed that the person needing help was actually nursing a gunshot wound. But wait, there’s more! A little further digging (you know, “further communication”) revealed that a second victim had also been shot. Because why have one police investigation when you can have two for the price of one?

Both individuals are currently enjoying the fine hospitality of University Medical Center. One is dealing with “serious” injuries while the other is in “moderate” condition, which in Lubbock-speak means they’ll probably be back at a Toot’n Totum by Friday. LPD has graciously labeled this an “isolated incident,” which is the comforting phrase they use to tell the rest of us that as long as we weren’t standing in that specific yard at 2:00 a.m., we’re totally fine. Probably.
