The City of Lubbock had to reassure everyone this week that, yes, life will go on even though their network went kaput. Out of “an abundance of caution,” they pulled the plug on all their systems Monday, and now they’re slowly creeping back online like your uncle’s 2004 Dell.
Public safety still works—so don’t worry, cops can still hand out speeding tickets and firefighters still have hoses. But if you need to pay your water bill? Hope you like driving to 1401 Avenue K and standing in line like it’s 1987. At least they’re not slapping you with late fees while the city figures out how to reboot.
Want to report a power outage? Forget apps or websites, it’s back to calling an actual phone number. Next thing you know, they’ll be telling us to send smoke signals.
Only in Lubbock do “industry best practices” look suspiciously like unplugging it and plugging it back in.
