Two Lubbock County deputies are recovering in the hospital after a semi plowed into their patrol cars on I-27 near 98th Street. Deputies Andrew Cavazos and Jorge Martinez had stopped to help a stranded family change a tire when the crash happened. Because in Lubbock, no good deed goes unpunished.

The semi driver, 57-year-old Gregory Vaught, admitted he was too busy trying to reconnect his Bluetooth to notice the giant flashing cop cars in front of him. By the time he looked up, he’d already rear-ended both units, sending Deputy Cavazos dangerously close to tumbling off the overpass.

Rowe credited quick-thinking bystanders who literally held Cavazos in place until he could be pulled to safety. Without them, this story would’ve ended with more than just hospital beds.

Despite all this, investigators say Vaught isn’t facing any charges—for now. Because apparently nearly launching a deputy off an overpass while fiddling with your phone is just another “oops” in Texas traffic law.

“Distracted driving” sounds tame—until it nearly kills two deputies on I-27. But hey, at least his Bluetooth’s connected now.
