Lubbock police have arrested 28-year-old Izaiah Hernandez on charges that include assaulting a pregnant woman and firing a gun in public—because apparently one terrible life choice wasn’t enough. According to court documents, the assault happened in August 2022 after Hernandez accused the victim—who is pregnant with his child—of cheating. He allegedly hit her in the face multiple times and struck the back of her head while she was hunched over, then jumped in his car and took off like a real stand-up guy.
Officers noted the victim’s face was red and swollen, and she told them this wasn’t some one-off incident—it had happened before, and this time she was done. You know, the kind of “final straw” moment that usually comes way too late because the system moves at the speed of West Texas molasses.
As if domestic violence wasn’t enough, Hernandez is also facing two separate firearm discharge charges. In 2019, he and another person were allegedly firing guns outside the former Charley B’s parking lot, because nothing says “good decision-making” like popping off rounds near a bar. Then in 2022, he allegedly fired several shots in the parking lot of a restaurant on Marsha Sharp. When police arrived, Hernandez and the other individual reportedly decided the best move was to provoke officers, knock over a body camera, and threaten to fight them. Bold strategy.
Hernandez is now sitting in the Lubbock County Detention Center with a bond set at $100,003—a number so oddly specific it almost feels like a joke, except none of this is funny.
At what point do we stop pretending this is “isolated behavior” and admit Lubbock has a long-running franchise called Guys Who Definitely Shouldn’t Own Guns?
