Frenship ISD’s Latest Extracurricular: 5th Grade Teacher Traded the Classroom for a Jail Cell

Well, Lubbock, it’s time for our favorite local pastime: reading a press release from a school district that’s sweating through its polo shirt. Nicholas Alonzo, a 29-year-old who was supposedly trusted to teach fifth graders at Upland Heights Elementary, decided to spend his Spring Break getting cozy with the Lubbock Police Department. He wasn’t there for a ride-along; he was there because he’s been charged with Online Solicitation of a Minor.

The district says they noticed some “concerning behavior” right before the break and put him on leave, which is HR-speak for “we smelled smoke but waited for the four-alarm fire.” While the rest of the faculty was busy actually relaxing, new allegations dropped like a heavy West Texas dust storm, leading to Alonzo’s arrest this past Wednesday. Naturally, the district issued a statement that hit every note on the “We’re Super Shocked and Totally Care” Bingo card, assuring us that student safety is their top priority—now that the guy is already in handcuffs.

Frenship ISD has made it clear that Alonzo won’t be returning to the campus, which is a real relief for anyone who prefers their elementary school educators to not be predatory creeps. They’ve also offered counselors to help families process the “alarming and unsettling” news. Because nothing says “quality education” like explaining to your ten-year-old why Mr. Alonzo is currently being schooled on the Texas Penal Code instead of fractions.

It’s truly heartwarming to see Frenship’s commitment to “excellence” extend all the way to the local booking desk, proving once again that in Lubbock, the most educational thing about our schools is often the police report.

Is it just us, or is “Spring Break” starting to feel less like a vacation and more like a tactical window for the LPD to clean out the faculty lounge?
