Authorities in Gaines County arrested Seth and Markeya Russell after a child was brought in with what was first reported as a “severe headache.” Turns out, EMS didn’t think this was your run-of-the-mill Tylenol situation, so they called in basically every badge in a 50-mile radius—Sheriff’s CID, Seminole PD, and the Texas Rangers.

After the joint investigation, both adults were charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury—a first-degree felony. The two are currently sitting in jail on bonds somewhere between $250,000 and $325,000 depending on which local news site you trust more this week.

The investigation is still active, which is reporter-speak for “we’re pretty sure more ugly details are coming, but we can’t legally say so yet.” And of course, authorities are now encouraging anyone with info to call in, which always makes you wonder how many people already know something in a tiny West Texas county and just… didn’t.

Another day in West Texas where the emergency call starts with a headache and ends with felony charges. Why is it always the quiet roads and county numbers where the worst stuff happens?
