Ghost Towns & Empty Desks: Texas Public Schools are Trending Downward (But Hey, More Room for Parking?)

So, the latest data from the nerds over at Texas 2036 is in, and it turns out Texas public schools are currently about as popular as a July afternoon without air conditioning. For only the second time in recent history, statewide enrollment has dipped below 5.5 million students. We’re looking at a 1.4% drop—the biggest “thanks, but no thanks” from parents since the 2020 pandemic when everyone realized they could just teach their kids at home while wearing pajamas.

The real kicker? The decline is being spearheaded by the Hispanic community and the elementary crowd. Apparently, 81% of the disappearing acts are Hispanic students, and about 60% of the total “missing” are in grades K-5. This isn’t just a tiny glitch; it’s a demographic “see ya later” that’s going to mess with school funding for years. It turns out when the “pipeline” starts leaking at the kindergarten level, you eventually end up with high schools that have more administrators than actual students.

Here in the Hub City, where we love to brag about our “world-class” education while simultaneously wondering why the property taxes on our crumbling ranch houses keep skyrocketing, this is exactly the kind of news we’ll ignore until it hits the football budget. We’ll probably just blame it on the wind or the lack of a Raising Cane’s on every single corner.

While the state prepares for “shrinking populations” and “growing pressures,” Lubbock will undoubtedly find a way to make it weirder. Are the kids moving to private schools? Are they being homeschooled by TikTok influencers? Or did they just realize that if you stay in school too long, you might actually have to get a job that requires staying in Lubbock? If this trend keeps up, maybe LISD can finally convert those empty elementary schools into what this town really needs: more luxury car washes and storage units. At least those don’t require a passing STAAR score to stay open, right?
