Grand Theft Nursing Home: Local Genius Trades Tech Parking Lot for 70 Months of Federal Hospitality

Well, folks, it only took four years, but justice in the Hub City has finally moved at the blistering speed of a tractor stuck behind a student driver on University Avenue. Victor Yannis Jr. was federally sentenced this past Thursday for a 2022 carjacking that was somehow both terrifying and impressively stupid.

Back in April 2022, around 3 a.m.—prime time for “nothing good ever happens”—Yannis decided the best way to get around Zone 3 at Texas Tech was to pull a knife on a student and take their car. He then sped off down 19th Street, presumably realizing too late that there is literally nowhere to hide in a city that is flatter than a pancake.

Two hours later, Yannis executed his master escape plan: he wandered into a nursing home and told the staff he was “hiding from the police.” Because nothing screams “inconspicuous” like a sweaty, agitated stranger barging into a care facility at 5 a.m. to hang out with the night shift and some residents who just want their pudding.

The Lubbock Police Department, shocked that a criminal actually announced his presence for once, picked him up on an unrelated warrant. The victim later identified him in a pharmacy parking lot—keeping the “Lubbock Scenic Tour” theme alive—and he finally pleaded guilty last November. Now, he’s looking at 70 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.

Is it really a “hiding spot” if you have to explain to the receptionist who you’re hiding from?
