The Texas Department of State Health Services just expanded its measles outbreak map, and guess what? Lubbock made the cut. Alongside Cochran, Dallam, Garza, and Lamar, our fine city now joins the honor roll of counties with ongoing transmission. Because nothing says “West Texas pride” like being part of a statewide public health disaster.

As of April 4, Texas has racked up at least 481 measles cases since January, and 95% of those come from the ten counties in the designated outbreak area. Translation: if you’re in Lubbock, the measles aren’t just knocking at the door—they’re already sitting on your couch.

Health officials are once again begging people to get the MMR vaccine. Infants? Early dose. Preschoolers? Second dose. Adults who think “I had it once when I was a kid”? Line up, you’re getting another one. But sure, go ahead and tell yourself essential oils and Facebook memes will do the trick.

Welcome to the outbreak club, Lubbock. Membership includes coughing, fever, rash—and a front-row seat to the consequences of “freedom.”
