Look, we all know the Lubbock area is about 20 years behind the rest of the world, but 44-year-old Leandro Rodriquez Jr. of Plainview seems to have missed the memo on several centuries of basic human decency. In a move that surprised absolutely no one who has spent more than five minutes reading local police blotters, Rodriquez was recently handed a 50-year federal prison sentence for being the human equivalent of a landfill fire.
The “boyfriend of the year” was caught after a child’s legal guardian—who actually possesses a functioning moral compass—found messages on a 10-year-old’s phone where Leandro was playing travel agent, telling the girl where to meet him once the adults left the house. Apparently, his idea of a romantic getaway was an overnight stay in Plainview, which is already a punishment in itself, but he decided to up the ante by committing sexual abuse while the victim’s younger sister watched.
When the Feds finally cracked open his phone, they found the usual “Local Creep Starter Pack”: explicit images and a video of the two “cuddling.” In the video, the 10-year-old tells the camera they are “happily married” because Leandro told her he “taught her how.” Nothing says “happily married” like a federal indictment and a half-century sentence in a cage where the only thing he’ll be teaching is how to avoid getting shivved over a pudding cup.
U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix—a man who has surely seen enough West Texas nonsense to last three lifetimes—delivered the 50-year hammer on Wednesday. Rodriquez pled guilty back in October to enticement of a minor, likely realizing that “but we’re married in my head” isn’t a legally recognized defense in the Northern District of Texas.
Fifty years in federal prison? At least he’ll finally be in a committed relationship with a roommate who has much higher standards for “cuddling.”
