Just when you think the Hub City has peaked in terms of local driving talent, a Monday morning commute reminds us that the bar can always go lower. Around 4:30 a.m. today, Lubbock Police attempted a routine traffic stop near 28th Street and Avenue P. Instead of pulling over like a functioning member of society, 52-year-old Benito Rivera chose chaos, initiating a high-stakes pursuit that lasted all of one block.
Realizing that driving away from the police is far too mainstream, Rivera veered onto a sidewalk near Avenue N and executed a flawless “ghost ride the whip” maneuver. He hopped out of the driver’s seat while the vehicle was still actively rolling. Naturally, practicing physics without a license caught up to him immediately; Rivera lost his footing, face-planted, and was promptly run over by his own driverless car, which then went on to pick a fight with a utility pole.
After a quick pit stop at UMC to treat his moderate injuries—and presumably his deeply bruised ego—Rivera was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center. Aside from his four outstanding warrants, he’s now facing charges for evading arrest with a vehicle and evading arrest on foot.
Honestly, you have to appreciate the sheer efficiency of a guy who manages to run himself over while trying to flee the cops; at least it saved the police department from having to deploy a spike strip.
