Monterey football coach Judd Thrash took the Plainsmen from absolute rock bottom—a 0–10 embarrassment in 2022—to a district title and playoff win in 2024. That kind of turnaround usually gets you a key to the city, or at least a contract extension. But this is Lubbock ISD, so naturally, it ends with a job posting and a “thanks for your service” press release.

Thrash was placed on administrative leave in April after his arrest and a vehicle crash, and that pretty much sealed his fate. Now, after three seasons, LISD quietly posted the opening late on a Friday afternoon (classic “bury the bad news” timing). Offensive coordinator Jason Sims has been keeping the program alive through spring workouts, while the district acts like none of this is awkward.

Only in Lubbock can a guy drag a team from 0–10 misery to a playoff win—then get remembered for a car crash instead of a comeback. Priorities, right?
