In a shocking display of common sense that must have left local pearl-clutchers gasping for air, the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously against designating a specific “prayer period” during the school day. While new state legislation essentially gave them a hall pass to turn the lunch hour into a revival tent, the board cited the First Amendment—yeah, that old thing—and pointed out that students and staff already have the right to pray whenever they want, provided they aren’t causing a scene.
But don’t worry, the board hasn’t gone “woke” just yet. To balance out the lack of scheduled holiness, they officially approved a fancy new process for parents and staff to challenge books in district libraries. Because nothing says “educational excellence” like giving people a formal ladder to climb when they decide a picture book is the source of all societal evil. Petitions will now start with the School Library Advisory Council before reaching the board, ensuring maximum paperwork for your censorship needs.
Meanwhile, Superintendent Kathy Rollo spent her week patting the district on the back for their response to a bomb and active shooter threat at Lubbock High. Sure, some parents had to wait several hours in the Texas sun to get their kids back, and the whole “multiple bombs on a timer” claim turned out to be a hoax, but Rollo is “pleased” because it was great practice for their protocols. They even brainstormed buying wheelchairs for waiting grandparents next time, which is a nice touch for our future scheduled catastrophes.
To round out the meeting, the board hired a new COO, Christopher Anderson, and recognized over 100 students for being actually good at things like music and wrestling. It’s good to know that while the adults are busy arguing over prayer clocks and library shelves, the kids are still managing to win state titles despite the constant distraction of “hoax” bomb threats.
Is it really a Lubbock school board meeting if we don’t simultaneously protect the First Amendment and build a better machine for banning books?
