Well, this is awkward. Lubbock ISD’s Board President Ryan Curry sent out a letter telling everyone that the Texas Education Agency had a “new policy” that automatically flags teachers anytime someone complains about them. Sounds bad—except the TEA says that’s not even remotely true. According to the state, there’s no new policy, and flags only happen when there’s an actual investigation. You know—like the one currently happening with Superintendent Kathy Rollo.
So, to recap: Curry told the public the flag was just routine procedure. The TEA then politely (but firmly) said, “That’s not how this works.” And Rollo? She’s still officially under investigation, though nobody’s saying why just yet. But her certification is indeed flagged—because, again, that’s what happens when the TEA investigates you.
Basically, the school district tried to PR-spin a misconduct investigation into a paperwork technicality, and the state called them out for it. Just another day of “clear communication” from the folks running Lubbock’s education system.
If this is how they handle “transparency,” maybe the real investigation should be into their public relations department.
