Another weekend in Lubbock, another “what the hell” headline. Police say 21-year-old Milton Melgar-Cruz spent his Friday evening pointing a handgun at people, firing it off for good measure, and—just to make sure he nailed the trifecta of terrible judgment—aimed it at someone holding a baby. Because why not? It’s Lubbock: home of the “Hold my beer” school of decision-making.

Officers found the shell casing and the gun, which must’ve been the easiest scavenger hunt of their week. Melgar-Cruz now faces four counts of Aggravated Assault, plus one count of making everyone in a one-block radius rethink their life choices. His bond sits at $102,000, which feels like both too much and not nearly enough for “almost shot a baby.”

It’s unclear what triggered this whole thing, but given it’s 44th Street on a Friday night, odds are good it was something between “minor argument” and “looked at me funny.”

Lubbock: where “don’t point guns at people holding infants” apparently still needs to be said out loud.
