In a very on-brand episode of Lubbock Crime Bingo, 31-year-old Kavaughn Jackson received eight years of deferred adjudication—basically the justice system’s version of “we’ll let this slide for now”—after a violent domestic assault in 2024. Police say Jackson punched the victim in the face, chased her with a kitchen knife, tried to stab her, strangled her, and continued hitting her once he put the weapon down. Because multitasking is apparently one of his strengths.
When officers arrived, they found visible injuries to the victim’s neck, nose, and lips, along with a large pool of blood on the floor. Jackson, meanwhile, had left the scene with his cousin, because nothing says “serious escape plan” like leaving with someone who’s probably also wanted for something.
Authorities simply waited for him to wander back home—because in Lubbock, criminals tend to return to the scene like it’s a boomerang—and arrested him during a traffic stop. And for all of this? Eight years deferred adjudication. Not eight years in prison. Eight years of “don’t mess up again or we might get serious.”
At this point, should we just replace the courthouse with a Hobby Lobby sign that says “Live, Laugh, Lightly Consequence”?
