A Lubbock man, 34-year-old Justin Liford, is heading to federal prison for the next two decades after being convicted of possessing child sexual abuse material involving a prepubescent victim. The case began when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent a CyberTip about a Verizon cloud account filled with illegal content. (Yes — the cloud. The place people store pictures of their dog, their lunch, and apparently, in this case, evidence of horrifying crimes.)

Liford and his partner, 29-year-old Dava Pound, were accused of not just possessing but producing child sexual abuse material between August 2022 and January 2023 while living together in Lubbock. Court records state Pound participated in creating the videos stored in Liford’s account.

Pound already pleaded guilty in June and will be sentenced later this month. She’s looking at anywhere from 15 to 30 years — which, in Lubbock terms, is about one full generation of new strip malls and five city rezoning fights over whether we really need another nail salon, but also a Sonic right across from it.

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that sometimes the worst people in Lubbock do accidentally back up their own crimes. Cloud storage: solving cases faster than half the local “See Something, Say Something” billboards ever did.
