Alfonso Ybarra, 62, and Jarred Ybarra, 32, were arrested after investigators say they starved a 10-year-old boy and locked him in a closet that had human feces inside. The child was discovered malnourished after being taken to the hospital in August, sparking the investigation.
Court documents reveal the boy was routinely denied food as “punishment” whenever Alfonso and Jarred thought he misbehaved. That meant watching the rest of the family eat at restaurants while he got nothing—and when he tried to sneak food at school or stores, it was treated like evidence of bad behavior rather than a cry for help.
Both men now face two counts of Injuring a Child resulting in serious bodily injury. Alfonso is being held on $125,000 bond, while Jarred’s bond is set at $250,000.
Only in Lubbock do you see grown men justify starving a child by saying he “stole food.” Newsflash: kids steal food when they’re hungry.
