Congratulations, Lubbock—you’ve officially been crowned the worst city in Texas for energy affordability. According to Home Energy Club, locals are shelling out 17.32 cents per kilowatt-hour, racking up average monthly bills of about $242. That’s not just a little higher; that’s “kiss your paycheck goodbye every summer” higher.

For comparison, folks in Houston and Sugar Land are chilling with bills that average about 14.10 cents per kWh. Even San Angelo and Abilene—hardly paragons of modern infrastructure—pay less than we do. But don’t worry, Lubbock: at least you can take comfort knowing we’re number one at something.

The study also points out that low-income Texans spend up to 15% of their income on electricity and that nearly a third of households would struggle to cover a $50 increase. In other words, if ERCOT sneezes, half the city’s broke.

So here we are: the “Hub City,” where the lights cost more than the rent. Anybody else starting to miss candles?
