An emergency scene under a concrete Lubbock overpass (labeled with a '16 FT 5 IN' sign). A marked police SUV with flashing lights, a fire engine, and responders stand on the shoulder. On the on-ramp lane above them, a lone motorcycle lies on its side, the site of a single motorcycle crash, on a clear day. A cell tower is visible in the distance.

Lubbock Riders Discover Gravity: Now Offering 40-Foot Scenic Drop Tours

Wednesday’s incident on South Loop 289 was your standard Lubbock “I forgot how lanes work” special. Kristopher Florez and Teaguen King decided to turn the left-hand lanes between Quaker and Slide into a motorized wrestling match. Along with passenger Mariah Ochoa, they took a high-speed tour of the asphalt’s texture, eventually sliding to a halt and earning themselves a group discount at the UMC emergency room.

But Thursday really stepped up the production value for the “Lubbock Sucks” highlight reel. Near Texas Tech Parkway, a lone rider on the Marsha Sharp Freeway decided that following the actual curve of the flyover was far too mainstream. Instead of staying on the multi-million dollar concrete bridge, the rider opted for a 40-foot vertical shortcut to the ground below.

The motorcycle stayed up on the overpass—presumably wondering where its owner went—while the rider tested the structural integrity of the pavement from four stories up. It’s a tragic, gravity-defying reminder that Lubbock’s interchanges aren’t just confusing puzzles designed to make you miss your exit; they’re apparently launching pads for anyone who thinks the “yield” sign is just a suggestion from the city council.

Is it too much to ask for Lubbock drivers to stay on the X-axis for just one consecutive 24-hour period, or are we officially transitioning into a 3D platformer where the floor is literally lava?
