Parents’ weekend at Texas Tech turned into “welcome to the crime tour” after 30 cars were broken into between Sept. 27–29, with 11 of those hits happening at local hotels. Families got to experience the true spirit of Lubbock: overpriced lodging, busted windows, and the joy of having your glovebox rifled through for loose Sonic mints.
The thieves weren’t even after valuables—unless you count an empty gun case, which one unlucky visitor lost. Police said Chevys and Dodges were targeted because criminals assume their owners stash firearms. Translation: drive a truck in Lubbock, and congratulations, you’re basically advertising “free guns inside” to anyone with a rock and two seconds.
Parents paying $550 for a hotel room weren’t thrilled to find their vehicles trashed in the parking lot. As one mom put it, “You couldn’t hire someone for the weekend?” Lubbock hospitality at its finest: jack up the hotel rates, skip on security, and let visitors leave with broken glass souvenirs.
Nothing says “Thanks for visiting Lubbock” quite like a $550 bill and a $250 deductible.
