Ah, Lubbock. The “Hub City.” The place where the wind blows 60 mph, the dirt is a permanent seasoning on your steak, and apparently, the local youth are treating their handguns like a DIY project from a very dark corner of Pinterest. Meet Adrian James Washington, III—a 20-year-old who clearly felt a standard .40 caliber Glock 23 just lacked that pizzazz necessary for a night out in the 806.

According to federal court docs, young Adrian was indicted this week for possessing a “machine gun conversion device.” For those of you who aren’t fluent in “Lubbock Felony,” that’s a switch. He took a regular handgun and decided it needed the firing rate of an A-10 Warthog. Because if there’s one thing our local streets need, it’s more bullets flying into the abyss at Mach speed.

Adrian wasn’t just playing amateur gunsmith, though. When he was picked up back in January, the cops found a little sampler platter of “Things That Get You 5-to-10.” Along with the DIY machine gun, he was hit with counts for a stolen firearm and over two ounces of marijuana. You have to admire the commitment to the bit: if you’re going to get the feds’ attention, you might as well go for the trifecta of questionable life choices.

Currently, he’s chilling in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $16,500 bond. That’s about the price of a used Honda Civic with a sketchy transmission—which, coincidentally, is probably more reliable than a Glock with a bootleg switch.

Is it really a “Hub City” weekend if someone isn’t trying to turn a handgun into a power tool while holding a stolen piece and enough weed to forget why they did it in the first place?
