Lubbock’s “Catch and Release” Program Now Includes Child Predators

Lubbock really is the “Hub City”—the hub of making sure the most dangerous people in town spend as little time behind bars as humanly possible. Our latest guest of honor, Brandon Box, was picked up on Friday the 13th for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child. You’d think a date like that would be unlucky for the criminal, but in Lubbock, the “bad luck” is usually reserved for the victims and the general public.

According to court records, the victim made outcries at UMC regarding repeated instances of sexual abuse. And because consistency is key, court documents show Box has been accused of sexual crimes against children before. It’s nice to see he has a hobby, I guess? Most people in this town just pick up pickleball or drinking too much at Chimy’s, but Box apparently prefers the “accused predator” lifestyle.

But don’t worry, concerned parents of the 806! Our legal system worked with its usual lightning-fast efficiency—not to keep him locked up, mind you, but to get him back on the streets. As of Tuesday, Box has already posted bond and is officially out of the Lubbock County Jail. Nothing says “public safety” quite like letting a repeat-accusation specialist back into the wild before the ink on the police report is even dry.

I guess the county jail was getting a bit too crowded with people who have expired registrations or overdue library books, so they had to make room by letting the aggravated felony suspects head home. It’s heartening to know that if you’re accused of something truly heinous, Lubbock will still treat you with the hospitality of a Chick-fil-A drive-thru.

At this rate, should we just start handing out “Get Out of Jail Free” cards with every purchase of a 72-ounce steak, or is the current system of “accuse, arrest, and immediately release” working well enough for everyone?
