Meet 39-year-old Arthur Soto, Lubbock’s newest resident at the local detention center and a real contender for the “Absolute Worst Human of the Month” award. Soto was picked up by the police on Thursday, facing a heavy-duty first-degree felony charge of indecency with a child involving sexual contact. But because this is Lubbock, a monstrous felony apparently isn’t complete unless it’s served with a side order of petty, bureaucratic local incompetence.
According to court documents, Soto’s brilliant plan back in April involved picking up a student from school for a “doctor’s appointment.” Instead, he used the drive to assault the juvenile victim. Fortunately, the victim completely thwarted his pathetic criminal efforts by using her backpack as a shield and screaming until Soto panicked, gave up, and drove her right back to school. Outstanding exit strategy, Arthur. The school staff immediately noticed the victim in tears, investigated, and called the cops.
When authorities finally tracked Soto down in the 1000 block of North Indiana Avenue, they didn’t just serve the felony warrant. In a classic display of Lubbock multitasking, jail records show he was also slapped with two counts of driving without a license and violating a promise to appear in court. You truly have to admire the sheer audacity it takes to run from a major felony warrant while simultaneously dodging the city over unpaid traffic tickets.
His bond is now sitting at a very specific $200,200—because nothing screams “Lubbock justice” quite like making sure the county gets its extra two hundred bucks for those outstanding traffic citations while booking a suspected child predator.
