Ronnie Garcia Jr., clearly bored with the standard prison library, decided to turn his time behind bars into a full-blown business degree in drug logistics. While locked up at FCI Big Spring, Garcia used a contraband cellphone and the encrypted messaging app Signal to coordinate the delivery of over 36 pounds of meth. That’s right—Lubbock’s criminal enterprise continues to be powered by phones the guards swear they’re totally keeping out.
His partner on the outside, Jason Morrison, was caught with nearly 16,000 grams of meth and sentenced to a mere 17.5 years—half of Garcia’s new 33-year staycation with the federal government. Court documents detail how Garcia orchestrated the drop, payment, and collection from behind bars, because apparently prison Wi-Fi is better than half of Lubbock’s home internet connections.
To round out this crystal-clear operation, a third co-conspirator, Gabriela Esquivel, has also pleaded guilty and is awaiting her own sentencing. Meanwhile, the DEA and Lubbock PD continue to pat themselves on the back for catching a guy who literally couldn’t leave the building.
If inmates can coordinate multi-pound drug deals from prison, maybe the city should hire them to fix the next tech outage at City Hall.
