A year after a terrifying highway shootout, 28-year-old Leslie Clyde Chew is sitting in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $150,000 bond.

Back in April 2024, Chew allegedly pulled up alongside another driver on Interstate 27, pointed a black pistol out of his window, and opened fire—shattering glass and hitting the victim in the arm. The victim’s passenger escaped injury, but the situation could have easily turned deadly.

According to court records, Chew wasn’t done. After the first shot, he stopped his car in front of the victims, allegedly tried to aim again—only to be stopped when another suspect yanked his arm down. Chew then sped away the wrong direction on I-27, southbound in the northbound lanes.

The victim was rushed to UMC, while his passenger refused treatment. Police later recovered evidence of the shooting, including a bullet hole in the driver’s door. Chew was arrested in Ward County in March 2025, nearly a year after the incident, and has now been booked into jail.

Nothing says “Lubbock driving” like getting shot at on I-27—and then watching the gunman flee into oncoming traffic.
