Ah, Texas Tech football—where our recruitment strategy apparently involves scouring the NCAA’s disciplinary waste bin for anyone with a pulse and a strong arm. Our latest transient savior, quarterback Brendan Sorsby, just learned a valuable lesson in accountability. The NFL has officially informed the 22-year-old that they will not be holding a special supplemental draft just to bail him out of the spectacular crater he recently made of his college career.
If you’ve been trying to avoid the local sports news, Sorsby transferred to Tech this offseason from Cincinnati, immediately took a leave of absence for a gambling addiction, and was promptly slapped with a permanent lifetime ban by the NCAA. Why? Oh, just the small matter of placing at least $90,000 worth of sports bets, including 40 wagers on his own team back when he was a freshman at Indiana. Naturally, instead of laying low, Sorsby dragged Tech into a radioactive cloud of national backlash by suing the NCAA for reinstatement, only to abruptly drop the lawsuit when he figured he could just hustle his way into the pros early.
Sorsby’s master plan was to petition for the NFL’s rarely used supplemental draft. Unfortunately for him, the NFL’s legal counsel penned a rejection letter so coldly savage it should be framed in the Jones AT&T Stadium lobby. The league pointed out that Sorsby submitted his request a mere three days before the deadline, included absolutely zero supporting documents, failed to address potential violations of state criminal law, and showed a complete lack of accountability. The NFL essentially told him they aren’t rewriting their rules for a guy who used fake names to hide his betting habits, meaning Sorsby is officially benched until the regular 2027 draft.
But hey, look on the bright side, Brendan—now that you have two full years of forced free time in Lubbock before you can even think about the NFL, at least you’ll have plenty of opportunities to find out if the local bookies take action on how many dust storms we’ll get before your next draft day.
