The South Plains Fair is once again reminding folks that it’s a gun-free zone—because apparently that needs to be said out loud in Lubbock. Unlike the Texas State Fair in Dallas, which got dragged into a lawsuit by AG Ken Paxton over its gun ban, the South Plains Fair can actually enforce the rule. Why? Because they bought the land from Lubbock County 80 years ago, making it private property. Translation: you don’t get to pack heat between the funnel cake stand and the Tilt-a-Whirl.

The fair pays for 15 to 30 police officers to patrol the grounds, plus the city chips in with parking lot towers and even mounted patrols. So no, your Glock isn’t needed to defend yourself from the goldfish booth or the world’s saddest petting zoo.

If you can’t survive a night at the fair without your sidearm, maybe the real thrill ride isn’t the Zipper—it’s therapy.
