Shallowater Band Director Moves Up from Local Creep to Federal Felon

Just when you thought Shallowater’s reputation for “family values” couldn’t get any more tarnished, Joseph Macaulay Gonzalez has managed to level up. Our favorite 27-year-old former assistant band director isn’t just a local disappointment anymore; he’s now officially a federal problem. On April 8, a grand jury decided that his extracurricular activities deserved more than just a state-level side-eye, indicting him for the federal crime of Enticement of a Minor.

It turns out that when the Texas Rangers were called in back in February to help the Shallowater ISD police—who were presumably busy making sure no one wore a hat indoors—they found a digital trail dating all the way back to 2023. While most parents use the “Remind” app to find out when the next overpriced wrapping paper fundraiser ends, Gonzalez was allegedly using it to “persuade, induce, and coerce” children.

The indictment confirms this wasn’t just a one-off “misunderstanding.” We’re looking at the continuous sexual abuse of multiple victims, with rendezvous occurring at their homes and, naturally, on school campus. Because nothing screams “educational excellence” quite like turning the band hall into a crime scene while the district is busy releasing statements about how “student safety is our top priority.”

Gonzalez is currently cooling his heels in the Lubbock County Detention Center, trading in his conductor’s baton for a permanent orange jumpsuit. It’s a bold career move, but hey, at least he’s finally practicing some rhythm behind bars.

If the district put half as much effort into vetting their staff as they do into scouting middle school quarterbacks, do you think we’d still be making “top local headlines” for federal sex crimes?
