Southwest Lubbock saw another “party gone wrong” when a short-term rental packed with hundreds of teenagers turned into a crime scene. Neighbors called police around midnight to complain about the noise, but no officers came out. By 12:44 a.m., those calls turned into reports of shots fired.
When police finally arrived at the house on 76th Street, they found 20-year-old Deon Lilly with a gunshot wound. He was taken to UMC, where he later died. Two others were also hurt: 18-year-old Adysen Gardner, who arrived at the hospital in a private vehicle after being shot in the backside, and a 16-year-old treated at Covenant for arm lacerations.
No arrests have been made yet, and the Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is investigating. But one thing’s clear: when you mix a short-term rental, hundreds of unsupervised teens, and zero police response, the odds of it ending peacefully are slim to none.
Airbnb might want to add a new filter: “Pet-friendly, Wi-Fi, no chance of turning into a homicide scene.”
