Forty-one-year-old David Martinez, from Slaton, Texas, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Tuesday for a second-degree felony offense of theft.
According to court documents obtained by EverythingLubbock.com, Martinez stole nearly $100,000 from the Bob Wills Foundation, a non-profit organization. He was subsequently arrested in Hall County and was indicted on May 31, 2023.
Court documents also showed that Martinez initially pled guilty on August 24, 2023, and was ordered to pay restitution of $97,235.73.
“The theft from this organization is a true betrayal. It’s heartbreaking to see someone steal from the very volunteers who give so much of their time and effort to honor a local legend with such an amazing annual event,” said District Attorney Luke Inman.
Martinez was on probation for over two years and never repaid any funds to the foundation, according to testimony.
