David Martinez, 41, of Slaton, will have plenty of time to think about his life choices—18 years, to be exact. He was convicted of stealing nearly $100,000 from the Bob Wills Foundation, the nonprofit that celebrates the king of Western swing. Because nothing screams “support local legends” like robbing the group that keeps their memory alive.
Court records show Martinez pled guilty back in 2023 and was told to pay back about $97K. Spoiler: he didn’t pay a dime. Instead, he spent two years on probation doing… well, apparently not much except proving he had zero interest in making things right. The DA called it a betrayal of volunteers who work hard to honor Bob Wills, which is polite code for “this guy is lower than dirt.”
Now Martinez is off to prison, where “fiddle tunes” probably have a very different meaning.
Stealing from a foundation that throws parties for Bob Wills? That’s not just theft—that’s a bad country song waiting to happen.
