The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office says 60-year-old Jose Luis Nunez Morales died after being shot by a deputy during a confrontation Friday morning on Highway 87. Deputies had responded to a 911 call reporting Morales was drunk and armed.

When deputies found him, they ordered him to keep his hands up. Instead, Morales reached to his side, pulled out a handgun, and was shot. Officers immediately switched from shooters to medics, giving first aid until EMS arrived. Morales was taken to UMC, rushed into surgery, and later pronounced dead.

Per standard procedure, the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave while the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit investigates.

In Lubbock, mixing booze and guns rarely ends well—and this time, it ended exactly how you’d expect.
