Gov. Greg Abbott has teamed up with Turning Point USA to make sure every Texas high school gets its very own chapter of the right-wing youth organization. Because when kids said they needed more funding for counselors, teachers, and textbooks, clearly what they meant was “please sir, may I have some culture-war propaganda?”
Abbott, Dan “Culture War Concierge” Patrick, and Turning Point’s Josh Thifault made the announcement from the Governor’s Mansion, which, you know, feels like the perfect setting for a monarchy-style decree over public education. This comes after private meetings, sudden funding commitments, and a suspiciously speedy rollout—almost as if this was planned behind closed doors. Weird.
Turning Point USA is famously the group that made a professor watchlist, which is basically Yelp for tattling on teachers who dare to think critically. They’ve also got a long track record of comments about LGBTQ folks, women, and non-Christians—so naturally, Texas officials think they belong in schools with minors.
Of course, there’s pushback. Some parents and students think this might be a pipeline for hate speech and harassment, while other states like Oklahoma and Florida are already threatening schools if they don’t sign up. Very freedom. Much choice. Truly inspiring.
But don’t worry—according to Turning Point, this is all about teaching kids how to register to vote and talk about “freedom,” which is apparently defined as “agreeing with Charlie Kirk’s Twitter feed.”
Because nothing says “free society” like a state-backed club telling teenagers which professors are too liberal. Wonder if the dress code includes brown shirts or if that comes later.
