Another Lubbock institution bites the dust. Tommy’s Famous Burgers on North University has closed up shop after nearly five decades of greasy greatness, with the owners retiring instead of grinding through another year on the grill. Since 1978, Tommy’s was a go-to for locals who wanted a straightforward burger without all the “gourmet” nonsense that keeps popping up around town.

The restaurant’s closure leaves more than just an empty building—it leaves a hole in the stomachs of Lubbockites who grew up on its burgers and fries. On the bright side, if you’re a vendor or just someone with a dream of starting your own greasy spoon, the kitchen gear is up for grabs by appointment.

First we lost our patience with traffic on University, now we’ve lost Tommy’s too. Lubbock keeps finding new ways to test our appetite for disappointment.
