LPD Proves Even Flashing Lights Can’t Protect You From Lubbock Traffic

It’s a beautiful Tuesday morning in the Hub City, which means it’s the perfect time for everyone to completely forget how basic road infrastructure functions. Right on cue around 9:30 a.m., a Lubbock Police officer and a local motorist decided to have a high-stakes meeting of the minds—and bumpers—at the intersection of I-27 and Erskine Avenue.

According to LPD, the officer was simply attempting the incredibly brave feat of traveling through an intersection when another driver struck the patrol vehicle. Because why check for oncoming traffic when you can just close your eyes and manifest a clear path through a major access road?

The scoreboards are in, and it’s a clean sweep for the civilian. The unnamed driver walked away reporting absolutely zero injuries, while the officer had to be carted off to UMC via ambulance with “moderate injuries.” You would think a massive, black-and-white police vehicle equipped with a literal light show on top would be easy to spot, but never underestimate the raw, unbridled tunnel vision of a Tuesday morning commuter.

Naturally, LPD deployed its Major Crash Unit to the scene, because nothing says “major police emergency” quite like a standard fender-bender that happens to involve one of their own. Investigators are currently on the scene trying to crack the mathematical mystery of how two vehicles managed to occupy the exact same coordinates at the exact same time.

If a trained law enforcement officer with a reinforced utility bumper can’t safely navigate Erskine at mid-morning, what hope do the rest of us honestly have?
