Lubbock Man Discovers ‘Aggressive Swaddling’ Is Not An Approved Parenting Technique, Gets Indicted

Welcome back to another depressing episode of “What is going on in the Hub City?” Today’s contestant is 22-year-old Miguel Silva, who was just indicted by a Lubbock Grand Jury on charges of Aggravated Assault of a Family/Household Member with a Weapon. Because if there’s one thing Lubbock never runs out of, it’s dust storms and people who absolutely should not be left in charge of a houseplant, let alone a human infant.

The details from East 16th Street are just as grimly predictable as our local potholes. Back on May 18, a mother arrived home to find her baby pale, lethargic, and completely unable to use her arm. Naturally, she called 911, prompting Lubbock Police to roll up and find an unresponsive child who had to be rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

But don’t worry, Miguel had a totally logical, completely foolproof explanation ready for law enforcement. According to court documents, he openly admitted to wrapping the baby in a swaddle, squeezing her with force, and then shaking her out of “frustration.” Brilliant. Because as we all know, the standard medical response to a crying infant is to treat them like a bottle of ranch dressing that just won’t come out.

Silva is currently cooling his heels at the Lubbock County Detention Center, where his stellar conflict-resolution skills have earned him a cozy cell and a hefty $150,000 bond.

At this rate, does the Lubbock County jail offer a loyalty rewards program, or do you have to hit a certain number of felony indictments before they give you a free t-shirt?
