Nominative Determinism Strikes Again: Clovis Woman Named ‘Outlaw’ Arrested for Living Up to the Family Brand

Because Lubbock apparently doesn’t have quite enough homegrown chaos to fill a local broadcast, KCBD graciously reached across the New Mexico border to bring us a heartwarming tale of family bonding from Clovis. At 3:22 AM on a Monday—the peak hour for rational human decision-making—a 17-year-old boy allegedly decided to settle a physical argument with his 19-year-old girlfriend by pulling out a handgun, threatening to kill her, and firing a round that grazed her head and hit her thumb. He then added a touch of classic romance by threatening her if she talked to the cops.

But a teenage crime spree is nothing without a supportive parental figure to guide the way. Enter his mother, who is quite literally named Ruby Outlaw. Look, when you carry a surname like Outlaw, you have a brand to maintain. You can’t exactly raise your kid to be an accountant or a mild-mannered actuary. Ruby didn’t just accept the family mantle; she actively leaned into it, allegedly helping her son attempt to scrub the crime scene and hide the handgun so effectively that the police still haven’t found it.

The Clovis Police eventually crashed the family business, detaining the dynamic duo after the victim was treated at a local hospital. Junior was carted off to a juvenile detention center in Lovington on a laundry list of charges, including aggravated battery and false imprisonment. Meanwhile, Mom was booked into the Curry County Adult Detention Center, facing charges of tampering with evidence and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Is it really fair to charge someone with “contributing to the delinquency of a minor” when delinquency is clearly just the family trade passed down through generations?
