Tech Leisure Pool Stays Dry: A Masterclass in Paying for Things You Can’t Use

Just when you thought you might actually escape the West Texas heat without developing a permanent layer of grit on your skin, Texas Tech has some “great” news. The Leisure Pool—that glorious oasis of student fees and questionable tan lines—is keeping its gates locked. It was supposed to open mid-April, but apparently, “maintenance” is the new Lubbock word for “not yet, suckers.”

The University Rec Center claims they are busy performing “seasonal maintenance and system checks.” You know, the kind of things most functional organizations do before the scheduled opening date. They’re checking mechanical systems and water quality to ensure a “high-quality experience,” which is university-speak for “we haven’t finished fishing the winter’s worth of tumbleweeds out of the filters yet.”

There’s no confirmed reopening date in sight, but don’t worry—the university’s Operations team is “working closely” on it. In the meantime, feel free to keep checking your bank account to admire where those mandatory maintenance fees are going. It’s comforting to know your money is being funneled into a facility that is currently about as useful as a rain gauge in a drought.

At least the dirt in the air is still free, right?
