Nothing says “Saturday night in the Hub City” like thinking you can outpace the law on a street that is basically one long, flat line to nowhere. Around 12:20 a.m., some local visionary decided that “reckless driving” near 82nd and Frankford wasn’t a prestigious enough charge. When an officer tried to pull them over, the driver chose to pivot into a high-stakes career in amateur stunt driving, leading police on a pursuit that lasted all of 32 blocks.
The “chase”—if you can call a straight shot down Frankford a chase—ended exactly how you’d expect a Lubbock Joyride to end: with a sudden, violent meeting between a car and a stationary object. Apparently, our protagonist discovered that physics is a lot harder to outrun than a patrol car. By the time they hit 114th Street, the driver lost control and successfully located the only light pole in the vicinity, effectively ending their short-lived NASCAR aspirations.
The wreckage left four people headed to the hospital to contemplate their life choices. The driver and the front-seat passenger escaped with minor injuries, while the two people in the back—who I’m sure were totally cool with their friend’s decision to flee the cops—ended up with “moderate” injuries. Now, the LPD Major Crash Unit gets to spend their weekend filling out paperwork because someone didn’t want to take a simple ticket at a stoplight.
Does anyone in this town realize that Frankford Avenue isn’t actually a sanctioned drag strip, or are we just waiting for the city to start installing participation trophies on every utility pole?
