Ah, Sunday afternoon on the South Plains. Some people go to church, some hit the local buffet, and others decide that a routine traffic stop in downtown Floydada is the perfect excuse to launch a multi-county police chase through the scenic, entirely flat nothingness of West Texas. Because why just sign a speeding ticket when you can turn your weekend into a low-budget action movie?
According to local authorities who had their Sunday football viewings rudely interrupted, the whole mess started around 3 p.m. when a driver refused to pull over and instead gunned it south down the highway toward Crosby County. But hey, give the suspect some points for manners: mid-pursuit, they actually pulled over to dump a female passenger on the shoulder of the highway. Nothing says “I care about your safety, babe” quite like abandoning your companion on a barren stretch of asphalt while a caravan of screaming police cruisers chases you down.
The grand finale went down just north of Ralls at the thrilling intersection of FM 207 and County Road 144. Apparently forgetting that West Texas terrain offers absolutely zero tactical cover unless you count a stray piece of farming equipment, the suspect stepped out of the vehicle with a gun. Despite being told to drop the weapon—shocking, I know—the suspect opened fire on a small army of Floydada police, Floyd County deputies, and Crosby County deputies.
The responding agencies returned fire, ending the chase permanently. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while the officers walked away completely uninjured. Now, the Texas Rangers are leading the investigation to figure out what exactly went wrong, which shouldn’t take long considering the entire flat county probably watched the whole thing happen from their front porches.
But hey, look on the bright side: at least that stranded passenger got a front-row seat to the most excitement Crosby County will see until the next cotton harvest, right?
