Welcome to West Texas, where a mere suggestion of rain instantly transforms our highways into a high-stakes demolition derby. On Saturday morning, a 54-year-old truck driver from Socorro found out exactly what happens when you mix a wet U.S. Highway 84, an 18-wheeler, and absolute defiance of basic vehicle safety features.
According to DPS, the driver’s Freightliner decided to take a spontaneous, high-speed off-roading tour through Lamb County. The rig veered into the median, took a scenic detour through a barrow ditch, and then launched right back across the highway lanes. Because what is a drive through the region without playing a little pinball with your 40-ton truck? The entire chaotic performance ended with the truck and trailer skidding and rolling completely over onto the driver’s side.
Tragically—and entirely predictably—the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The tragic twist, courtesy of the investigators? He wasn’t wearing a seat belt. That’s right, folks. Piloting a massive metal land-missile through slick, rain-soaked conditions and opting to rely on sheer willpower to stay in the cab rather than a three-second click.
Is it really too much to ask that we physically strap ourselves in before attempting to drift a semi-truck through a Panhandle puddle?
