Nature is Healing: Avenue Q Nightlife Demands Its Weekly Sacrifice

Ah, the weekend in the Hub City. Some people spend it enjoying the fine dust blowing in from New Mexico, others spend it praying their air conditioner doesn’t explode, and a select few choose to immerse themselves in the high-stakes theater that is the 50th and Avenue Q intersection after midnight.

Around 2:08 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, just as the local nightlife was reaching its peak of bad decisions and sticky floors, the Lubbock Police Department was called to a nightclub in the 5000 block of Avenue Q. The occasion? A “shots fired” report, because apparently, the DJ’s playlist just wasn’t dropping hard enough. One unlucky patron managed to secure a gunshot wound and a VIP ambulance escort to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

LPD’s Major Crimes Unit is currently on the case, bravely investigating how an environment fueled by cheap liquor, 2:00 a.m. closing times, and Avenue Q energy could possibly result in violence. It’s truly a mystery for the ages, and we can only hope our city’s finest can crack the code on why things always seem to go sideways when the bars empty out.

But hey, look on the bright side: at least UMC’s trauma ward is getting plenty of practice keeping the citizens of Lubbock alive for another weekend of questionable life choices.
