Two Lubbock residents say they got more than just front-row seats to Bob Knight’s hunting hobby—they got peppered with birdshot. Mary Ann Chumley says the coach accidentally clipped her foot (and her horse) while shooting too close to her barn. Knight apologized, she forgave him, end of story.

But James Simpson, who lives nearby, says the next day was less accident and more aimed insult. After yelling at Knight and a buddy for shooting too close to his house, Simpson claims he was pelted in the neck and back while cleaning his pool. He insists it was intentional. Knight’s response? Classic Bobby: called it “absolute [expletive]” and told everyone to move on.

Police, shockingly, decided not to press charges against the legendary coach. Instead, they’re “reviewing” reports while Knight gets to keep firing away, metaphorically and literally. For context, this isn’t Knight’s first hunting blooper—back in ’99 he accidentally shot a friend in Wisconsin and had to cough up fines for hunting without a license.

In Lubbock, you can apparently assault a neighbor with birdshot and shrug it off as “ridiculous”—as long as you’ve got a winning record and a few NCAA banners. Maybe the real game Knight’s playing isn’t basketball, it’s “How many people can I accidentally shoot and still get away with it?”
